Tips & Tricks #1 – Instant Word text

If your wrists ache from keyboard frenzies or your mind is glop after the day’s wear, this little trick in Microsoft Word will instantly generate sample text for you to manipulate or use for filler. For example, assume you needed a few paragraphs of text to fill in empty space on your page, typing the following on a blank line in a document will spill out 5 paragraphs, each composed of 3 sentences (the default value for this command):

=rand()

Make sure to hit the Enter key and observe the result.

Now, let’s say you wanted a different amount of text. Instead of leaving the ( and ) blank in between, use a number, followed by a comma, and then a second number. The first number denotes the number of paragraphs, and the second, the number of sentences within each paragraph.

Therefore,

=rand(1,4)

would generate one paragraph containing four sentences. This command is just one of several hidden gems in Word and other Microsoft Office applications.
